An elegant salon writing desk produced in France in the late 19th century, conceived in the Neoclassical tradition with a clear reference to the aesthetics of the Louis XVI style. The carcass is crafted from fine hardwoods and veneered with carefully selected timbers, richly decorated with refined marquetry. The rectangular top with softly rounded corners features a central allegorical composition depicting attributes of the arts and sciences, executed in polychrome inlay and framed by an elaborate ornamental border.

The outline of the top is accentuated by a finely chased gilt bronze gallery. The frieze is adorned with floral marquetry and enriched with gilt bronze mounts at the corners. The front incorporates a single drawer fitted with a gilt bronze pull. The interior is arranged with compartments intended for writing implements. A hinged top reveals an additional working surface with a mirror mounted to the inner side.

The turned, fluted legs are decorated with gilt bronze mounts and terminate in sabots. They are united by curved stretchers converging toward a central decorative finial in the form of a vase, set on a contrasting plinth. The overall composition is distinguished by harmonious proportions, high-quality craftsmanship and the decorative richness characteristic of the period.
