A distinguished lady’s table of the Napoleon III period, created in France in the second half of the 19th century in the refined manner of the celebrated master Adam Weisweiler (1746-1820). The rectangular structure with characteristic corner projections, slender fluted legs and elegant arched stretchers reflects the traditions of late Classicism reinterpreted through the opulent aesthetics of the Second Empire.
The principal highlight of the piece is its rare porcelain top measuring 35 x 58 cm, almost entirely covering the upper surface of the table. Executed in the style of the Royal Sèvres Manufactory, it features a large gallant pastoral scene: shepherdesses and a shepherd by a spring against a lakeside landscape, painted in delicate polychrome. A mesh ornament with miniature flowers and round medallions depicting allegories of love complete the decorative ensemble.
The frieze is adorned with porcelain panels depicting multi-figure scenes of promenades and amorous conversations in the spirit of 18th century French painters. The side panels feature elongated floral compositions. The gilt bronze mounts - acanthus leaves, laurel wreaths, beads and guilloché elements - unify the structure into a harmonious artistic whole.
A concealed secret lock is fitted inside the drawer, a characteristic feature of elegant furniture designed for ladies’ boudoirs. The table represents a rare synthesis of Classical precision and Rococo charm, forming a distinguished element of an aristocratic interior.
Dimensions: Height 81 cm; width 80 cm; depth 55.5 cm.
Condition: Very good. Gilding well preserved. Minor traces of use. Porcelain panels without cracks or restoration.
Provenance: Private European collection.
In the second half of the 19th century, French decorative arts experienced a pronounced revival driven by the cultural policies of the Second Empire and a renewed desire to affirm France’s artistic supremacy. The era of Napoleon III fostered a vibrant return to earlier styles, particularly the Classicism and courtly refinement of Louis XVI with their characteristic lightness of line, elegance of proportion and harmony of decorative motifs.
The legacy of Adam Weisweiler, one of the most refined cabinetmakers of the late 18th century, played a pivotal role in this revival. His notable features - fluted legs, architectural corner projections, exquisite gilt bronze mounts and the use of Sèvres porcelain - inspired many of the finest furniture makers of the Napoleon III period. The combination of structural clarity and decorative richness became emblematic of furnishings created for boudoirs, salons and private aristocratic apartments.
The incorporation of porcelain panels in the style of the Royal Sèvres Manufactory distinguished high level pieces of the era. French miniaturists of the late 19th century produced complex gallant and pastoral scenes inspired by Rococo masters such as Boucher, Fragonard and Watteau. These compositions transformed furniture into unified works of art combining carving, bronze, painting and architectural design.
Such tables were created for intimate spaces - ladies’ boudoirs, private cabinets and salons. They signified refined taste, social stature and were often included in distinguished private collections. Today they are recognised as significant examples of French decorative arts of the late 19th century and valued for their historical, artistic and museum importance.
In very good collectible condition. Gilt bronze surfaces with even gilding; wood without losses; porcelain panels intact, without cracks or restoration. Minor traces of use consistent with age.
