An elegant rectangular silver snuff box, executed by the silversmith Ivan Savelyevich Britsyn for the firm of Joseph Abramovich Marshak in St Petersburg. The lid is decorated with deep blue guilloché enamel forming a radiating sunburst pattern, converging toward a central accent set with a diamond, interpreted as a symbolic representation of a luminary.

The composition is further enhanced by finely executed laurel garlands in two-colour gold, emphasising the ceremonial and status-driven character of the object. The strict geometry of the form, combined with restrained ornamentation and the noble contrast of enamel and precious metals, reflects the aesthetics of late Imperial jewellery art at the turn of the 20th century. The sides are adorned with delicate guilloché engraving, creating a refined play of light. The interior is fully gilded, in keeping with the highest standards of manufacture for luxury silver objects of the period.

The firm of Joseph Abramovich Marshak occupies a prominent place in the history of Russian jewellery of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Renowned for its impeccable craftsmanship and refined decorative language, the workshop produced silver objects that met the tastes of the imperial capital’s elite. During this period, snuff boxes remained an essential element of gentlemen’s daily and ceremonial attire, functioning both as utilitarian items and as markers of social status.

Guilloché enamel, particularly in deep saturated tones, was among the most technically demanding and prestigious decorative techniques of the time. The radiant composition employed on the lid creates an impression of inner luminosity, highlighting the virtuosity of execution. The laurel garlands, rooted in classical symbolism, evoke ideas of honour, dignity and distinction. The inclusion of a diamond accent elevates the object from a functional accessory to a true work of jewellery art. Today, such snuff boxes are regarded as exemplary examples of pre-revolutionary Russian silver and are highly sought after by collectors and museums alike.

The enamel is well preserved, displaying a rich, even colour and a clearly defined guilloché pattern. The silver shows a soft patina consistent with age. Minor signs of careful use, appropriate to the period.
