An exceptional pair of antique silver-mounted table figures depicting Emperor Maximilian I of the Holy Roman Empire and King Ferdinand II of Aragon in full armor on caparisoned warhorses. Executed in Hanau around 1910, these figures embody the stylistic grandeur of historicism inspired by the Second Battle of the Spurs at Guinegate (1513). Each figure is richly detailed, with articulated visors revealing meticulously modeled faces. These equestrian compositions convey the chivalric splendor and sovereign symbolism of their subjects. The horses are clad in elaborate heraldic armor, echoed in the massive rectangular bases adorned with family crests, lending the works a monumental air. Fine craftsmanship is evident in every detail — from bridles and stirrups to weaponry and reins — showcasing the silversmith’s virtuosity.

These figures belong to a significant tradition born in Hanau — a leading center of German silver craftsmanship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Hanau silversmiths were renowned for producing historicist replicas of Renaissance and Baroque objects, admired for their artistry and fidelity. Among the most respected makers was Neresheimer & Co., whose works were widely distributed in the UK through the efforts of importer Berthold Muller, based in London.

Emperor Maximilian I (1459–1519), known as the “last knight,” and Ferdinand II of Aragon (1452–1516), consort of Isabella of Castile, were pivotal monarchs of the 16th century. The Battle of the Spurs in 1513, commemorated in these works, marked a notable military victory for Anglo-Flemish forces over the French.

As works of decorative art, these table sculptures hold dual significance: tributes to the legacy of European chivalry and masterpieces of German silversmithing. Neresheimer’s creations are so masterfully executed that they have often been mistaken for 17th-century originals, underscoring their extraordinary level of craftsmanship.

Berthold Muller & Son
The company Berthold Muller & Son was founded in 1893 as an import firm in London, at 165 Wardour Street. It initially operated as an agency distributing silver produced in Hanau from the workshop of Ludwig Neresheimer and Co. The company`s activities spanned the period from the late 19th century to the early 20th century and involved three generations of the Müller family, who were master sheet metal and silversmiths. In 1915, Bertha Müller anglicized his name to Miller and the firm was renamed B. Miller & Son. From that time on, the company continued to operate as wholesale silversmiths and jewelers, specializing in the creation of replicas of antique silverware, as well as ivory, miniatures and enamels.
