A striking and highly dynamic bronze sculpture of the Meiji period depicting a kneeling samurai at the moment of maximum tension before releasing an arrow from a long yumi bow. The composition is constructed along a powerful diagonal defined by the drawn arrow and the elegant S-shaped curve of the bow, creating a vivid sense of movement and internal energy. Master Yoshimitsu Hō (芳光炮) conveys psychological intensity through the torsion of the torso, the extended arm, and the concentrated expression of the warrior.

The figure is cast in bronze with refined chasing and partial gilding. The samurai wears traditional hakama and ceremonial attire adorned with mon - stylised clan emblems. The textile decoration includes symbols associated with the Minamoto and Seiwa Genji clans, as well as crane motifs traditionally linked to the Mōri clan. Gilded ornamental details emphasize the ceremonial dignity and elevated status of the figure.

The face is executed with remarkable precision. The eyes are inlaid with shakudō, enhancing the depth and intensity of the gaze. The traditional hairstyle and eboshi ceremonial cap complete the historically grounded representation. Iconographically, the figure may be associated with Minamoto no Tametomo 1139 - 1170, the legendary archer of the Heian period celebrated in military chronicles.

On the reverse is a gilt plaque engraved with the master’s signature “芳光炮,” confirming authorship by Yoshimitsu Hō.

The Meiji period 1868 - 1912 marked a profound transformation in Japanese society and artistic production. Following the opening of Japan to international trade, Japanese bronze masters achieved international recognition through participation in World Expositions. Sculptural representations of samurai became emblematic of national identity, appealing strongly to Western collectors fascinated by Japan’s warrior heritage.

Archery held deep cultural and spiritual significance in Japan. The discipline of kyūdō was regarded not merely as martial training but as a philosophical and meditative practice. Legendary figures such as Minamoto no Tametomo symbolised strength, loyalty, and unparalleled mastery of the bow. In late nineteenth-century bronze sculpture, such subjects were rendered with theatrical dynamism and extraordinary technical refinement.

The use of shakudō inlay for the eyes, extensive gilding, and detailed rendering of clan mon indicate a high-quality workshop and a work likely intended for an international audience. Today, Meiji bronze sculptures are recognised as important examples of Japanese metal artistry, representing a synthesis of samurai tradition and refined decorative aesthetics during Japan’s era of modernization.

Overall good collector’s condition. Natural bronze patina present. Gilding partially preserved. Minor age-related wear, without restorations or losses.
