A mature work by Georgy Lapshin, created during his continuous artistic period on the French Riviera. The painting depicts a sandy shore with fishing boats resting by a wooden pier under the soft evening light. The transparent atmosphere, calm surface of the sea, and refined color balance create a poetic image of the Mediterranean coast. By the distinctive features of the landscape relief, the artist depicted the sandy coastline of the Bay of Cannes, where he repeatedly painted from nature.

Lapshin uses broad, confident brushstrokes, combining the academic training of the Moscow school with the plein-air freedom of French painting. The palette is built on subtle blends of ochre-blue and golden tones, conveying the mood of sunset light and shimmering reflections on the water. The work reflects the artist’s mature mastery: decorative precision, rhythmic harmony, and a profound sense of light that became the hallmark of his style.

Georgy Alexandrovich Lapshin (1885–1950) represents the generation of Russian painters who, in emigration, found a personal synthesis between realism and impressionism. A graduate of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, and a pupil of S. Korovin and A. Arkhipov, he continued his education in Paris, absorbing the traditions of French impressionism and post-realism. From the late 1920s he settled in southern France, drawing inspiration from the Riviera’s landscapes. Saint-Raphaël, Cannes, and the Esterel coast became his recurring motifs.

“Fishing Boats” belongs to Lapshin’s mature period, when he achieved exceptional harmony of color and light. The sandy shore, soft horizon, and evening glow indicate the coast of the Bay of Cannes, between Cannes and Saint-Raphaël, where the artist painted a series of seascapes. These works combine realistic observation with decorative unity, turning everyday motifs into poetic symbols of calm and serenity.

Lapshin’s paintings from this period were exhibited in Parisian galleries and today are held in museums and private collections across Europe. “Fishing Boats” stands among his rare works that preserve the atmosphere of the pre-war French Riviera — the vanished world of fishermen’s harbors and wooden piers that disappeared after the coastal reconstruction of the mid-20th century.

Good condition. Natural patina and even aged varnish. Minor craquelure not affecting the composition. The canvas is strong, the paint layer stable, and the color range retains its depth and transparency.
