BIOGRAPHY

Georgy Alexandrovich Lapshin was born in Moscow in 1885. He received his artistic education at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he studied within the traditions of the Russian realist school. In his early period he was influenced by the academic system of painting and the Russian landscape tradition of the late nineteenth century.

Following the revolutionary events of the early twentieth century, the artist left Russia and settled in France. From the 1920s Lapshin lived and worked permanently in Paris, where he became part of the circle of Russian émigré artists and the broader Parisian artistic milieu. He actively participated in exhibition life, presenting works in galleries and salons where a circle of collectors gradually formed around his work.

The artist died in Paris in 1950.

CAREER STAGES

The early stage of his career is connected with the Russian artistic school and his studies in Moscow. During this period the foundations of his compositional structure and realistic interpretation of landscape were formed.

In the 1920s the French phase of his career began. Lapshin fully developed his own artistic language, focusing on views of Parisian streets, the banks of the Seine, French port towns and maritime landscapes. His works appeared in exhibitions of Russian émigré artists and in Parisian salons.

During the 1930s and 1940s the artist reached the mature stage of his style. In this period he produced the majority of works depicting Paris, Normandy, the French Riviera and various French ports. His paintings circulated through galleries and private collections.

STYLE, TECHNIQUE AND DIRECTION

The painting of Georgy Lapshin developed at the intersection of the Russian realist tradition and the French Impressionist approach. His principal genre was the urban landscape and the marine scene.

His compositions are built around the atmosphere of the city and the changing effects of light. The works are characterised by a free painterly handling of the brush, the use of impasto and a насыщенная colour palette. In his views of Paris the artist frequently depicted bridges, riverbanks and historic quarters.

In marine and harbour scenes particular attention is given to the state of the water, reflections and atmospheric effects. His technique combines impressionistic freedom of brushwork with a clear structural organisation of the composition.
