A monumental pair of gilt bronze candelabra, each surmounted by a sculptural figure of a paradise bird with wings outstretched. The composition of each piece is structured around a central baluster richly decorated with relief ornament, rising from a multi-tiered base supported by elegantly curved feet adorned with elaborate vegetal motifs. The upper section is formed as a crown of gracefully scrolling candle arms terminating in drip pans, each embellished with elongated clear crystal pendants that enhance the play of light and impart a distinctly ceremonial character.

The birds are rendered with pronounced attention to the plasticity of the plumage and the dynamism of the silhouette, aligning these works with the traditions of Russian Historicism and the romantic interpretation of natural motifs characteristic of 19th century decorative arts. The ornamental vocabulary of the bodies includes stylized foliage, fluting and medallions, typical of high-quality bronze production of the period.

Dimensions: Height: 52.5 cm. Width: 32 cm. Depth: 70 cm.

Condition: Good condition. The gilding is evenly preserved with a natural age-related patina and minor signs of wear consistent with use. The crystal pendants are largely intact, with possible minimal losses that do not affect the overall visual impression.

Candelabra of this type occupy a significant place in the history of Russian decorative and applied arts of the 19th century, when fire-gilded bronze became one of the principal materials for the decoration of ceremonial interiors in noble estates and urban residences. During this period, Russian craftsmen actively embraced the language of Historicism, combining elements of Classicism, Neo-Rococo and Romanticism with motifs rooted in national artistic traditions.

The image of the bird held a profound symbolic meaning in Russian visual culture of the 19th century. Paradise birds, resonating with folkloric images such as Sirin and Alkonost, were perceived as embodiments of light, harmony and the transcendent realm. Their inclusion in interior objects enhanced not only the decorative appeal but also the symbolic dimension of the piece, transforming it into a focal point of the space. Comparable motifs appear in the works of leading Russian bronze foundries, catering to aristocratic taste and high artistic standards.

Beyond their functional role as sources of illumination, candelabra served as status symbols that shaped the ceremonial atmosphere of grand salons and reception rooms. Crystal pendants, widely employed in lighting fixtures of the period, intensified candlelight through refraction and reflection, a quality especially prized in interiors of the second half of the 19th century. The combination of gilt bronze and crystal signified superior craftsmanship and refinement.

This pair of candelabra represents a characteristic example of mature Russian Historicism, demonstrating a synthesis of sculptural expression, decorative richness and functionality. Such objects were often integral to coordinated interior ensembles, reinforcing the social standing and aesthetic aspirations of their owners.

Overall good condition. The structures are stable, with no visible deformations. The gilded surfaces show an even natural patina, with no evidence of later restoration. The crystal elements are predominantly original, presenting a cohesive and highly presentable appearance.
