Russian silver of the early 20th century reflects the aesthetic ideals of Art Nouveau, an era that sought harmony between tradition and modern artistic expression. Inspired by the heritage of ancient Russian craftsmanship, silversmiths reinterpreted traditional forms with a renewed sense of rhythm and ornamentation. The kovsh — a traditional Russian ladle symbolising generosity and prosperity — evolved into a decorative and ceremonial object, often presented as a gift or included in luxurious service sets.
The kokoshnik, a traditional element of Russian women’s costume, became one of the emblematic motifs of the “Russian Style”, frequently used in architecture, jewellery, and decorative arts. In this ladle, the kokoshnik form acquires sculptural expressiveness, becoming the compositional centre and a symbol of the union between national heritage and modern design.
Moscow workshops such as Ovchinnikov, Khlebnikov, Sazikov, and Fabergé achieved extraordinary technical and artistic refinement, combining silver, gilding, and enamel in sophisticated compositions. Objects of this type were exhibited at art and industrial exhibitions, symbolising the revival of national traditions and the excellence of the Russian decorative arts.
Today, such ladles are regarded as rare examples of early 20th-century Russian silverwork and hold both artistic and historical significance. Comparable pieces are preserved in the collections of the State Historical Museum, the Moscow Kremlin Museums, and the Hermitage.
