An outstanding example of Russian landscape painting of the second half of the 19th century, executed by the artist A. Konstantinova. The painting depicts a tranquil pond surrounded by dense firs and deciduous trees reflected in the still surface of the water at sunset. The composition is built with rare harmony and a deep understanding of atmospheric perspective: the mist on the horizon enhances the depth, while golden reflections on the water create an atmosphere of peace and contemplation. In the lower right corner, the artist’s signature in Cyrillic is visible: “A. Konstantinova.” The painting is executed in the spirit of Julius von Klever (1850–1924), a master of monumental and poetic Russian landscapes.

Russian painting of the second half of the 19th century was marked by the search for a national artistic identity, in which landscape became central. If in the first half of the century Russian art was strongly influenced by academicism and Western European models, in the second half artists increasingly sought truthful and poetic depictions of their native land. The most significant role was played by the “Society for Travelling Art Exhibitions” (Peredvizhniki), founded in 1870, whose members — Ivan Shishkin, Alexei Savrasov, Fyodor Vasilyev, and later Ilya Repin — showed Russian nature as a source of national strength and spiritual depth.

A. Konstantinova’s work follows these tendencies and is executed in the spirit of Julius von Klever (1850–1924), one of the major masters of late Russian Romantic and Symbolist landscape. Klever was known for his dramatic forest views with striking light effects and an atmosphere of mystery. The present painting reflects this tradition, combining golden reflections of sunset, mirror-like water surfaces, and poetic stillness.

Thus, the work is not only of high artistic value but also an important testimony to the influence of Julius von Klever and the broader Russian landscape school of the late 19th century.

The painting is in excellent condition, without losses of the paint layer; light natural craquelure consistent with age; the original frame with minor signs of wear.
