A rare silver ladle shaped as a stylized Slavic boat, crafted by the renowned Sazikov firm in 1891. The sculptural body is adorned with chased ornament resembling scaled boat plating. The bow is decorated with volutes centered by a warrior’s shield, while the handle takes the form of a pine cone garland topped by a seated warrior in full armour and helmet, sword in hand. The interior is richly fire-gilt, evoking the shimmering seabed.

The piece is a sculptural interpretation of the legendary boat of Sadko, the epic Novgorodian gusli player and seafarer. The figure of the warrior seated at the stern evokes Sadko himself — a poetic and heroic symbol of the Russian spirit.

Created in 1891 by the Sazikov firm, this ladle is a superb example of the Neo-Russian style — a romantic revival of national imagery and legendary motifs during the reign of Alexander III.

It draws inspiration from the epic tale of Sadko, a musician and merchant of Novgorod, who sailed to the undersea realm of the Sea Tsar. The ladle’s hull, with its scale-like relief and gilded interior, embodies this mythical voyage. The warrior figure at the stern is a poetic emblem of Sadko transformed into a spiritual hero — navigating the forces of destiny and Russian tradition.

As a leading Imperial supplier, Sazikov’s firm was renowned for its technical brilliance and artistic synthesis. Works like this were often gifted to nobility, exhibited internationally, and served as objects of cultural diplomacy — merging craftsmanship with the ideological aesthetics of Imperial Russia.

Outstanding condition. Gilding partially darkened. Clear marks. Later drilled hole for suspension. No structural or decorative losses.

SAZIKOVA Moscow-Petersburg company
Sazikov′s firm was founded in Moscow in 1793 by Pavel Fedorovich Sazikov. The business was continued by the son Ignatius (1793-1868), Paul (1815-1856) and his grandchildren. PF Sazikov, a merchant of the third guild, was the owner of a small workshop in Moscow, which several decades later turned into an extensive enterprise with a branch in St. Petersburg. In 1810, Sazikov became the owner of a factory for the manufacture of various silver items, in 1837 he received the title of a court supplier, and in 1842 a St. Petersburg branch of the factory was opened. Sazikovs firm was the first jewelry company in Russia that turned to national history and art in its products and was one of the main ones in the development of the "Russian" style art. Many famous foreign artists and sculptors were involved in the work, as wells their advanced experience and equipment. The products successfully competed with the works of the best European jewelers, Sazikovs firm was considered one of the best in the middle of the 19th century, had certificates of honor, small and large gold medals for the All-Russian exhibitions of artistic and industrial goods in 1835, 1849, 1853, 1861, 1865. As well as a large gold medal and the Order of the Legion of Honor for the world exhibitions in London in 1851 and in 1867 in Paris.
