An outstanding example of late 19th-century Russian decorative art — a silver butter dish shaped as a festive loaf (karavay), crowned with a miniature throne-form salt cellar. Created at the Moscow workshop of Pavel Ovchinnikov, Imperial Court Supplier and one of the most celebrated jewellers of Tsarist Russia. The symbolic unity of bread and salt in a single composition reflects the deep-rooted traditions of Russian hospitality, ritual, and table culture.

Crafted in 84 standard silver with gilding, the object stands on a circular base supported by four spherical feet. The perimeter of the base is adorned with a refined champlevé enamel frieze featuring a complex geometric motif typical of the Panslavic style — a design inspired by ancient Rus and folk decorative arts, reflecting the national identity movement in Russian applied art of the second half of the 19th century.

The enamel palette includes rich and contrasting hues: turquoise, azure, white, and ruby red. Two medallions decorate the base — one bearing the elegant monogram “AJ”, the other inscribed in French: Souvenir de P.K. 1896, marking a personal gift and commemorative date. The elevated salt cellar, placed atop the loaf, is likewise decorated with vibrant enamel work and dominates the sculptural composition.

Marks: Full mark of Pavel Ovchinnikov with Imperial double-headed eagle Imperial Court Supplier; Smaller oval mark with initials “PO”; Moscow assay mark dated 1896, standard “84”, and assay master’s initials “AA” for Anatoly Apollonovich Artsibashev.

Produced in 1896 by the prestigious firm of Pavel Ovchinnikov, this silver butter dish exemplifies the union of functionality and national symbolism in Russian decorative arts. Shaped as a ceremonial loaf crowned with salt, it draws on the archetypal imagery of “bread and salt” — a profound cultural token of welcome, reverence, and communal ritual.

The turn of the 19th century saw a cultural revival in Russia that embraced ancient Rus’ heritage. The Panslavic style, emerging from this movement, fused folk motifs, ecclesiastical art, and medieval ornamentation into a national aesthetic. In this artistic climate, the Ovchinnikov firm — a pioneer in enamel and silversmithing — produced works of remarkable refinement and cultural depth.

Appointed as Supplier to the Imperial Court, Ovchinnikovs workshop mastered the demanding technique of champlevé enamel, achieving exceptional clarity and chromatic brilliance. The stylised Panslavic patterns became a hallmark of Moscow’s school of enamelling.

The French dedication Souvenir de P.K. 1896 further indicates the object’s status as a diplomatic or ceremonial gift, perhaps presented to a foreign dignitary or esteemed guest — a testament to Russia’s cultural projection and imperial identity.

In good collector’s condition. Enamels are vivid, with no visible losses. Gilding evenly preserved, with light signs of age. Patina consistent with the period. Hallmarks are clear and conform to Russian Imperial standards.
