A rare collectible art object — a minimalist industrial porcelain wall panel designed by Victor Vasarely (1906–1997) for the renowned German porcelain manufacturer Rosenthal, Studio Linie, circa 1970. Limited edition: this is number 45 of 50, bearing the original black marker signature of the artist on the reverse and the iconic green Rosenthal Studio Linie Germany stamp.

The panel is a square composition of 25 porcelain modules, each approximately 9.8 × 9.8 cm, mounted in a stainless steel frame. The modules vary in shape — concave and convex circles, flat and embossed squares — and are rendered in Vasarely’s signature palette: cobalt, crimson, violet, turquoise, emerald, orange, and sky blue. A striking white circle on a black ground breaks the central line, creating a visual and conceptual focal point.

A deliberate subversion of formal sequence: no line — vertical, horizontal or diagonal — achieves complete continuity. Vasarely, master of optical illusion, uses form and color to break rational logic, shifting the viewer into a space of perceptual ambiguity and artistic intuition.

In 1970, Victor Vasarely, pioneer of Op Art and innovator of 20th-century visual language, partnered with Rosenthal, Germany’s leading porcelain manufacturer, through its experimental Studio Linie division. The collaboration marked a turning point in the integration of high art into collectible design objects.

Rosenthal, known for bold partnerships with artists and designers such as Bjørn Wiinblad, Tapio Wirkkala, and Raymond Loewy, gave Vasarely a platform to translate his conceptual vision into porcelain. The result is a modular, optical composition, challenging the viewer’s expectations through disrupted symmetry and hypnotic color interaction.

The white circle on black evokes Kazimir Malevich’s suprematist vocabulary — here reinterpreted in industrial materiality. Vasarely democratizes art through reproducibility while maintaining authorship via signed and numbered editions.

Now highly prized in museum collections, these panels reflect the blurring of boundaries between art and design, emblematic of the intellectual and visual experimentation of the 1970s.

In excellent condition. No losses, chips, or color fading. Artists signature and factory stamp are clear. The stainless steel frame is intact and original. A rare museum-grade example.
