An elegant silver vase of classical form with a flared lip, adorned with fine engraving of chrysanthemums and foliage. The botanical motif is rendered with a high level of detail in a manner characteristic of Japanese metalwork. The polished surface produces a mirror-like reflection. The vase rests on a slightly raised ring base. On one side of the body is a vertical signature in Japanese characters — an artists engraving traditionally applied by hand, marking the work as individually executed.
Marks: Vertical hallmark with Japanese characters 純銀 光村製 (Jun-Gin Mitsumura-sei), meaning pure silver, made by Mitsumura, confirming attribution to the renowned Mitsumura workshop. This hallmark corresponds to a high silver standard, indicating a silver content of no less than 950/1000, typical for top-grade Japanese export ware.
Dimensions: Height: 24 cm; Diameter: 12 cm
Weight: 557 g
Condition: Excellent condition, with no dents or deformations; minimal signs of use.
The Mitsumura workshop (光村製), active in Tokyo during the first half of the 20th century, holds a significant place in the history of Japanese silver craftsmanship. Founded as part of a broader industrial-artistic revival after the Meiji Restoration, Mitsumura focused both on domestic production and export, with pieces shown at major international exhibitions of applied arts.
Their vases and vessels were crafted from high-purity silver (typically 950 or higher) and combined traditional Japanese forms with decorative motifs that gained popularity during the Taishō and early Shōwa periods. The chrysanthemum, in particular, symbolized longevity, nobility, and imperial virtue.
The hallmark 純銀 光村製 guarantees authenticity and a high artistic standard. Mitsumura pieces are held in major Japanese museum collections and appear on the international auction market as prime examples of early 20th-century Japanese modernism.
The vase is in superb condition, with no damage or restoration. Surface with deep polish, engraving sharp, marks clearly legible.
