An elegant baluster-shaped wine jug with a body of clear cut glass featuring vertical faceting. The glass body is mounted on a narrow silver foot ring. The silver handle, of gracefully curved and branched form, is harmoniously integrated into the composition and emphasizes the refined silhouette of the piece. The hinged lid is decorated with finely chased and engraved vine leaves and tendrils, symbolically associated with the wine theme. The combination of cut glass and finely worked silver reflects the high level of artistic and technical craftsmanship characteristic of leading St Petersburg workshops of the late 19th century.

The firm Nicols & Plinke occupied a distinguished position among the leading jewelry and silver houses of St Petersburg in the second half of the 19th century and held the official title of Purveyor to the Court of His Imperial Majesty. Founded by foreign entrepreneurs and fully integrated into the artistic milieu of the Russian imperial capital, the workshop catered to aristocratic and courtly clientele. Its production was distinguished by exceptional quality of execution, careful selection of materials, and close attention to contemporary European artistic trends.

The late 19th century marked a flourishing period for table silver and serving vessels intended for formal dinners, diplomatic receptions, and private salons. Wine and water jugs combining glass bodies with silver mounts were particularly appreciated for their balance of functionality and decorative elegance. Cut glass emphasized clarity and light, while silver elements provided structure and ornamental refinement.

Vine motifs, widely used in the decorative arts of the Historicist and early Art Nouveau periods, carried symbolic associations with abundance, hospitality, and refined dining culture. Comparable examples from St Petersburg court-related workshops are preserved in museum collections. The high standard of chasing, precise detailing, and harmonious proportions allowed the works of Nicols & Plinke to compete successfully with leading European silver manufacturers.

Today, such jugs are regarded as characteristic examples of late 19th-century St Petersburg silver and are highly sought after on the international antiques market, reflecting both the artistic level of metropolitan production and the refined domestic culture of the Russian Empire at the turn of the century.

Overall good condition. Minor signs of age and use consistent with the period. The glass is free from cracks and chips, and the silver elements are well preserved; the lid and handle remain fully functional.
