A monumental French gilt-bronze chandelier executed in the Napoleon III style, embodying the refined eclecticism of the Second Empire. The composition is structured around a powerful central stem lavishly adorned with rocaille scrolls, acanthus leaves and sculptural ornamentation. From the body extend elegantly curved arms forming ten light points.
Each arm terminates in a frosted glass shade shaped as an open lily flower. The softness of the glass contrasts with the dynamic brilliance of the gilt bronze, achieving a refined decorative balance. The central section is enriched with sculptural winged griffins, traditional symbols of strength and protection. The lower register is further embellished with figures of putti, reinforcing the ceremonial character of the ensemble.
The upper section is crowned by a vivid cobalt-blue sphere decorated with applied gilt stars and an ornamental band. Above rises a radiant sunburst finial, lending the composition an allegorical and triumphal presence. Electrified and fully functional.
Marks: None observed.

Condition: Good. Even gilding with minor signs of age and natural patina. No structural deformations or losses.

The Napoleon III style emerged in France during the Second Empire and represents one of the most theatrical expressions of 19th-century Historicism. Parisian bronze workshops produced opulent lighting fixtures for hôtels particuliers, palatial residences and official interiors. The aesthetic language combined elements of Baroque, Rococo and Renaissance revival into monumental and richly ornamented compositions.
Chandeliers of this period were conceived as sculptural statements. Griffins symbolized authority and guardianship, putti conveyed allegorical refinement, and celestial motifs such as star-studded spheres and sunburst finials evoked imperial cosmology and grandeur. Gilt bronze, achieved through casting, chasing and fire-gilding techniques, ensured durability and a luminous surface quality.
Today, Second Empire chandeliers remain highly sought after on the international art and antiques market for their sculptural sophistication, decorative richness and strong presence within Historicism and Napoleon III interiors.
Stable construction. Gilding well preserved with light age-related patina. Glass shades intact without chips or cracks. Electrification later and in working order.
