The order was established on March 14, 1815 by the Spanish King Ferdinand VII in honor of the Queen of Castile Isabella I with the original name Royal American Order of Isabella the Catholic, to reward for the display of loyalty and diligence in defending the Spanish possessions in America. On July 26, 1847, by Royal Decree, the order was reorganized as a civil service award and became the Order of Isabella the Catholic.
