A pair of ceremonial epaulettes intended for enlisted ranks or non-commissioned officers of the Imperial Russian Army. The epaulettes are executed in the characteristic mid-19th century form, with a rounded lower shield and an elongated upper tongue designed to be secured beneath the shoulder strap of the uniform.
At the centre of each epaulette is a circular field bearing an applied gilt cipher of Emperor Alexander II, formed as a stylised intertwined letter “A” with the Roman numeral “II”, surmounted by the Imperial crown. The cipher is enclosed within a semi-circular gilt border, emphasising the ceremonial and representational character of the object. The upper section of the epaulettes is decorated with a metal field of pronounced scaled texture, typical of parade insignia for enlisted personnel and non-commissioned officers.
The backing is made of vivid red cloth with a red piping along the upper edge, allowing the epaulettes to be confidently attributed to the 2nd Leib-Uhlan Courland Regiment, of which Emperor Alexander II was the Colonel-in-Chief.

Dimensions: Height: 13 cm. Width: 9 cm. Thickness: 1.5 cm.

Condition: Good. The cloth backing is well preserved, with natural signs of age and wear. The metal elements retain an even, noble patina, without deformation or losses.

Ceremonial epaulettes bearing the Imperial cipher constituted an important element of uniform symbolism in the Imperial Russian Army during the second half of the 19th century. Under the reign of Alexander II, the system of regimental patronage retained particular significance, underscoring the personal connection between military units and the throne. The presence of the Emperor’s cipher on elements of dress served as a visual marker of supreme patronage and elevated regimental status.
The 2nd Leib-Uhlan Courland Regiment was among the elite cavalry formations of the Imperial Army, distinguished by its vivid colour identification and expressive uniform details. For enlisted ranks and non-commissioned officers, epaulettes with a metal field, without fringe, were prescribed, in strict accordance with contemporary regulations and the hierarchical structure of military insignia.
Such epaulettes were in use from the mid-19th century and were primarily worn as part of parade and full dress uniforms until their usage was significantly restricted by the reforms of the 1880s. Today, these objects are regarded as rare and valuable testimonies to the military history and visual culture of the Russian Empire, highly sought after by museums and specialised collections of militaria.

Overall good condition. The textile backing is intact, without tears or losses. The gilt metal elements are well preserved, with an even patina and no evidence of later restoration. The condition is consistent with the age and historical character of the object.
