An expressive cabinet sculptural composition created in St Petersburg in the workshop of Nichols & Plinke, executed in silver with gilding and mounted on a polished lapis lazuli base. The composition depicts a woodcutter at the moment of chopping a tree. The figure is presented in a dynamic pose with a raised axe, conveying the tension of physical labour.

The sculptor carefully rendered the characteristic image of a Russian peasant: a long belted shirt, boots, a beard and expressive facial features. The scene unfolds in a forest setting. The central element of the composition is a tree with finely modelled bark and a crown formed by sculpturally rendered leaves and cones. At the base of the tree lie the personal belongings of the character, a hat, cloak and travel bag, reinforcing the narrative character of the scene.

The contrast between the deep blue lapis lazuli and the gilded silver gives the composition a striking decorative presence typical of the artistic productions of St Petersburg workshops in the second half of the 19th century.

In the second half of the 19th century Russian decorative arts experienced a period of active development associated with a growing interest in national themes, genre imagery and subjects drawn from folk culture. In the artistic milieu of St Petersburg a distinct direction of cabinet sculpture and jeweller’s plastic art emerged, aimed at wealthy patrons and collectors. Such works combined the traditions of academic sculpture with the refined techniques of the jeweller’s craft and the use of precious and semi precious materials.

The firm Nichols & Plinke, known in St Petersburg as the “English Shop”, occupied an important place within the artistic production of the Russian Empire. Founded by William Plinke and Charles, also known as Konstantin Nicholls, it became one of the leading suppliers of silverware, bronze objects and luxury decorative goods in the capital. Between 1842 and 1879 the factory and shop were operated by the first guild merchant Robert Yakovlevich Kokhun, during whose management an extensive production base with its own workshops was established on Ligovka.

The factory produced silver table and tea services, decorative vases with sculptural compositions and objects intended for interior decoration. The high artistic quality of the pieces was ensured through the involvement of renowned jewellers and craftsmen, while professional sculptors were responsible for the sculptural elements. The Imperial Court Office of the Russian Emperor purchased luxury items through the Nichols & Plinke shop, and from 1855 to 1880 the firm served as a regular supplier to the Chapter of Imperial and Tsarist Orders.

Genre miniatures of this type often formed part of thematic cycles devoted to Russian folk tales, fables and scenes of everyday labour. Such works were perceived as artistic interpretations of the national character and traditional rural life and became an important part of Russian decorative art of the 19th century.

Overall condition good. Silver and gilding preserved with even signs of natural wear. Details of the composition remain sharp, without losses or deformation. The lapis lazuli base shows no cracks or chips. No evidence of later interventions or restoration.
