A pair of ceremonial epaulettes intended for enlisted ranks or non-commissioned officers of the Imperial Russian Army. The epaulettes are executed in the characteristic mid-19th century form, with a rounded lower shield and an elongated upper tongue designed to be secured beneath the shoulder strap of the uniform.
At the centre of each epaulette is a circular field bearing an applied gilt cipher of Emperor Alexander II, formed as a stylised intertwined letter “A” with the Roman numeral “II”, surmounted by the Imperial crown. The cipher is enclosed within a semi-circular gilt border, emphasising the ceremonial and representational character of the object. The upper section of the epaulettes is decorated with a metal field of pronounced scaled texture, typical of parade insignia for enlisted personnel and non-commissioned officers.
The backing is made of vivid red cloth with a red piping along the upper edge, allowing the epaulettes to be confidently attributed to the 2nd Leib-Uhlan Courland Regiment, of which Emperor Alexander II was the Colonel-in-Chief.
