A romantic seascape by Count Alexey Mordvinov, painted in 1849, captures the refined atmosphere of the northern coast. On the sandy spit, two fishing boats with partially lowered sails stand alongside a horse and several fishermen, preparing for loading or unloading. In the distance, at the waterline, a vessel leans slightly to one side, while on the horizon, small white sails fade into a soft haze. The moist, changeable sky, the silvery tones of the water, and the gentle gradations of light and shadow create an elegiac stillness, as if the sea has paused between storm and calm. Signed lower right: Count Mordvinov 1849.

Count Alexey Mordvinov (1794–1868) — Russian naval officer, administrator, and amateur painter, member of a distinguished noble family that played a significant role in the development of the Imperial Navy. His art emerged at the intersection of mid-19th-century romanticism and personal maritime experience. Having participated in naval campaigns, Mordvinov possessed an in-depth knowledge of ship architecture and the marine environment, lending his seascapes remarkable authenticity.
In the 1840s–1850s, Russian marine painting flourished, influenced by European schools (the coastal scenes of Clarkson Stanfield, the 17th-century Dutch seascape tradition) and Russian masters such as Aivazovsky, Bogolyubov, and Lagorio. Mordvinov stood out for his ability to combine documentary precision with a poetic vision of the sea, creating works where the landscape becomes a symbol of time and memory.
This painting belongs to the rare body of his works. The masterfully rendered atmosphere, subtle colour transitions, and restrained yet expressive composition make it a fine example of Russian Romantic marine art, valued by collectors and museums.

In good collectible condition; canvas and paint layer stable, 19th-century style frame in excellent preservation.
