A painting attributed to the distinguished Russian impressionist Stanislav Zhukovsky — one of the most poetic painters of the late 19th – early 20th century, renowned for his depictions of Russian estate life. “Datcha with Flowering Garden”, painted in 1921, captures the golden atmosphere of autumn, filled with nostalgia and gentle melancholy. At the center stands a wooden country house with a terrace, surrounded by a blooming garden and framed by yellow foliage. Sunlight reflected in the windows and softly lighting the porch creates a mood of serene solitude. Zhukovsky’s characteristic decorative style, lively brushwork, and warm palette transform this everyday scene into a lyrical memory of a vanished world. Signed and dated S. Zhukovskiy 1921 in the lower right corner.

Country House with Blossoming Garden (1921) belongs to the late period of Stanislav Zhukovsky’s work, when the artist, having settled in Poland after the Revolution, turned with deep nostalgia to the imagery of the lost Russian estate world — a symbol of harmony and beauty in his oeuvre. In the 1910s–1920s, Zhukovsky, a student of Vasily Polenov and Alexei Savrasov, developed his own painterly system that united realistic observation with the shimmering luminosity of Impressionism.
In contrast to his earlier interiors and structured park scenes, Zhukovsky’s late works reveal heightened emotion and musicality of color. The sunlit garden becomes a metaphor for life — its fleeting beauty and tranquil inner rhythm. Painted in 1921, while in exile, this work continues his exploration of the “Russian estate” theme, now imbued with gentle melancholy, as a recollection of a vanished epoch.
Zhukovsky is considered one of the foremost representatives of Russian Impressionism. His art was highly esteemed by contemporaries; he exhibited with the Union of Russian Artists and participated in shows in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Warsaw, Vilnius, and Paris. Today, his works are held in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum, the National Museum in Warsaw, and many private collections. Country House with Blossoming Garden naturally belongs among his finest works, alongside Spring. Sunny Day, Estate in the Old Park, and White Veranda — all bearing the artist’s hallmark fusion of light, space, and poetic color.
The painting is in good overall condition. The canvas is firm and reinforced. Paint layer stable. Minor craquelure and natural varnish aging. No restorations or losses. The color palette retains depth and vibrancy.
