A striking abstract composition titled Jack by the prominent Russian artist Vladimir Nemukhin (1925–2016), executed in 1969 in tempera on paper. The central figure, associated with the playing card jack, is interpreted as a metaphor for a character caught in a web of political and personal dynamics. A stylized figure with a blue face, red cap, and a suit composed of brushstrokes, formulas, and graphic marks dominates the scene. Despite its seemingly chaotic form, the composition is deliberately structured and filled with philosophical depth.

The title Jack is recorded in the official catalogue of the 1971 exhibition in Copenhagen (Knægt — Danish for Jack). The artists signature appears at the lower left: Vl. Nemukhin 69.

Vladimir Nemukhin (1925–2016) was one of the leading figures of the Soviet nonconformist art movement in the second half of the 20th century. A member of the Lianozovo group, he studied at the Central Union Studio in the 1940s and was strongly influenced by painter P. E. Sokolov. From the early 1960s, Nemukhin developed a unique visual language, centered on the symbolic use of playing cards as metaphors for fate, chance, power, and illusion.

Jack (1969) belongs to his mature period and reflects his synthesis of abstract expressionism with philosophical symbolism. The card is not depicted literally but functions as a conceptual scaffold. The use of blue, red, black, and white adds tension and theatricality. Exhibited in Denmark’s leading institutions, the work exemplifies Nemukhins international recognition. His paintings are held in the Tretyakov Gallery, State Russian Museum, MAMM, Centre Pompidou, and others. This piece embodies a visual language of internal resistance and freedom during an era of censorship.

Good condition. Tempera on paper without losses. Minor edge wear. Preserved in original exhibition frame and backing.
