In the second half of the 19th century, Moscow developed a distinguished school of silversmithing, blending Russian artisanal traditions with emerging decorative influences. During this period, domestic silverware became not only utilitarian but also a symbol of refinement and social prestige.

Matvey Nikiforov, active in the 1860s–1880s, was among the finest Moscow silversmiths. His mark “МН” appears on highly detailed and refined tableware. Especially prized are pieces executed in the trompe l’oeil technique, where silver is masterfully transformed to mimic woven or textile textures, creating optical illusions that reflect the artistic ideals of the era.

Sugar baskets such as this were favored by merchant and noble households alike. They graced elegant tea services, were offered as prestigious gifts, and often became heirlooms. Today, such works are part of major museum and private collections, including the State Historical Museum and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Moscow.

In excellent condition. Gilding is bright and even; surface intact. Hallmarks are clear. No restoration traces.
