An exquisite and exceptionally rare gold snuffbox with elegantly cut corners, executed in the finest traditions of the Saint Petersburg jewellers’ school at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The body is decorated with polychrome enamel in sky-blue and deep cobalt tones, enriched with white and gold ornamental bands.

The hinged lid is adorned with a finely painted enamel miniature after William Beechey’s painting “Portrait of the Children of Sir Francis Ford Giving a Coin to a Beggar Boy”, 1793. The charitable subject, emblematic of Enlightenment sentiment and moral virtue, is rendered with remarkable delicacy and precision. The composition is set within an oval medallion framed by a gilded laurel garland.

The borders and chamfered corners are enriched with a three-colour decorative scheme: dark blue enamel floral garlands; geometric cobalt bands; and engraved gold ornament heightened with white enamel. The central and side panels are decorated with light blue enamel fields, geometric reserves and finely engraved floral ornament, creating a refined contrast with the warm brilliance of the gold body.

The interior surfaces are smooth and mirror-polished. The piece is attributed to Pierre Theremin, active in Saint Petersburg circa 1800.

Pierre Theremin was a French court jeweller active in Saint Petersburg during the 1790s and early 1800s, a master of the foreign guild and supplier to the Cabinet of His Imperial Majesty. He executed snuffboxes with guilloché enamel and painted inserts, as well as ceremonial and award commissions for the Imperial Court and the Chapter of Orders.

His Saint Petersburg works belong stylistically to Late Neoclassicism and the early Empire period. A defining specialization of his workshop was enamel over guilloché: finely engine-turned engraving on gold covered with layers of translucent coloured enamel, creating depth of tone and a luminous surface vibration. Documented colours include deep blue (bleu), azur with lilac undertones, and a light chrysoprase turquoise-green (crisopar).

Theremin’s snuffboxes typically feature octagonal and rectangular forms, geometric friezes including meander patterns, garlands, borders and painted enamel plaques with architectural or genre subjects. In some cases later inserts from the 1820s–1830s are encountered, associated in historiography with later replacement practices.

Hallmarks recorded include joint and individual marks: FT (Frères Theremin), PT and FKT. Certain pieces also bear engraved factory inscriptions referencing Saint Petersburg.

This example embodies the characteristic features of the Theremin workshop and represents a rare survival of court goldsmithing from Saint Petersburg around 1800.

Enamel miniature and fields well preserved. Minor surface wear to interior gold. Hallmarks partially rubbed. Structurally sound, hinge fully operational.
