A remarkable large-format kovsh in the Russian style, created by the Eighth Moscow Jewelers’ Artel in the early 20th century. The body is shaped as a ladya boat with an expressive spout in the form of a marsh bird - a snipe, traditionally regarded as a symbol of hunting fortune and trophy presentation, emphasizing the ceremonial and gift-related character of the object. The entire surface is densely covered with cloisonné enamel featuring a complex floral composition characteristic of the Moscow school: rose and crimson buds, turquoise and emerald acanthus scrolls, graphically articulated by fine silver cloisons.

The bird’s head is highlighted with contrasting blue enamel executed “en grille”; the base of the beak is accentuated with golden enamel, while the beak itself is carefully polished. The interior surface is finished with rich fire gilding. The outer rim is decorated with a pearl border, and the tail-handle is reinforced with an openwork support in the Neo-Russian style. The kovsh demonstrates a high level of chased relief, flawless soldering of the cloisons, and exemplary polishing, attesting to the first-class craftsmanship of Moscow artel masters.

Marks: “8A” - mark of the Eighth Moscow Jewelers’ Artel; Moscow assay mark of 1899–1908 with a female head in a kokoshnik facing right within an oval and fineness “84” (875/1000); initials of the assay master Ivan Sergeevich Lebedkin (“IL”).

The Eighth Moscow Jewelers’ Artel ranks among the most authoritative cooperative workshops in Moscow at the beginning of the 20th century. Established during the reform of the craft system, artels consolidated leading silversmiths and enamelers, ensuring strict quality control and a unified artistic standard. The Moscow school of silverwork was distinguished by its mastery of cloisonné enamel and a strong orientation toward the Russian Style, shaped by the legacy of the Kremlin workshops and the Armoury Chamber.

Works of the Eighth Artel are characterized by large ceremonial forms, rich floral ornamentation, refined cloison technique, and dense fire gilding. The choice of a bird motif for the spout reflects the Neo-Russian fascination with folklore symbolism and natural imagery. The snipe, alongside the peacock, was associated with prosperity, hospitality, and hunting luck, making such kovshes particularly suitable as gifts and commemorative trophies.

Between 1899 and 1908, Moscow assay supervision was conducted by Ivan Sergeevich Lebedkin, during whose tenure the “84” metric system (875/1000) and the kokoshnik head hallmark were introduced, allowing reliable dating of Moscow silver from the turn of the century. Kovshes of this imposing size were intended for ceremonial table use and presentation, often awarded by hunting societies or to officials presiding over formal banquets. The structural reinforcement of the tail-handle and the virtuoso “en grille” enamel on the bird’s head demonstrate the high level of cooperation within the artel, where chasers, enamelers, and polishers worked from artistic designs to achieve museum-quality finishes. Within the field of Imperial Russian silver collecting, such kovshes represent rare and highly representative examples of Moscow cloisonné enamelwork of the early 20th century.

Overall good condition. The enamel shows no evident losses or cracks. The gilding is largely preserved, with signs of early restoration to the interior surface. Minor surface wear and a light age patina are present, without affecting the display quality.
