A masterpiece of 18th century jewellery art, this rare two-wing snuff box is made from solid natural agate and 18-karat gold. The unique combination of precious materials, craftsmanship and mythological subject matter makes it an outstanding example of decorative and applied art of the Rococo era. The front side is decorated with an exquisite gold bas-relief depicting a scene from ancient mythology: Venus and Adonis surrounded by Cupids in a luxurious garden. Detailed floral and plant ornaments in the Rocaille style emphasize the artistic sophistication of the work. The special design of the snuff box includes two independent compartments with separate hinged lids, symbolizing the mythological love story of Venus and Adonis - their tragic separation, death and subsequent reunion. This motif is allegorically associated with the idea of immortal love and the seasonal rebirth of nature. The interior is decorated with a picturesque pattern of natural agate, varying from light to rich honey-amber shades, with smooth transitions in the structure of the stone. Additional sophistication is given by natural old-cut diamonds inlaid in the front parts of the lids. The central and lower belts of the case are decorated with voluminous gold ornaments in the form of flower garlands and plant elements, executed in the best traditions of the Rococo era.
