An exquisite hanging oil lamp executed after an original design by Sergei Ivanovich Vashkov, one of the leading masters of Moscow Art Nouveau and a key reformer of ecclesiastical artistic language in the early 20th century. The composition is distinguished by its refined architectonics and a carefully balanced interplay between structural clarity and decorative expressiveness. A domed finial surmounted by a cross crowns a system of chains supporting a circular mount with a central deep-blue glass vessel. The lower section is adorned with suspended chains bearing green glass beads and a Chi-Rho cross, referencing early Christian symbolism. The lamp exemplifies Vashkov’s characteristic synthesis of Byzantine tradition, Old Russian heritage, and Art Nouveau aesthetics.

This hanging oil lamp belongs to a pivotal phase in the renewal of Russian ecclesiastical art in the early 20th century, when artists and architects sought to reconcile ancient liturgical traditions with the visual language of modernity. During this period, church metalwork and liturgical objects were no longer treated as secondary accessories but as integral elements of sacred space, contributing to a unified artistic and spiritual environment.
Sergei Ivanovich Vashkov occupies a central position within this movement. A disciple and associate of Viktor Vasnetsov, he worked extensively in the field of church decorative and applied arts, designing iconostases, liturgical vessels, enamels, and metalwork. His artistic method was grounded in the scholarly study of Byzantine and Old Russian prototypes, which he reinterpreted through the principles of Art Nouveau, achieving clarity of form, symbolic depth, and exceptional material culture.
Founded in Yaroslavl in 1736, the firm of P.I. Olovyanishnikov & Sons had become by the turn of the 20th century one of the foremost manufacturers of ecclesiastical metalwork in Russia and an official Supplier to the Imperial Court. Vashkov’s appointment as artistic director in 1901 marked a decisive moment in the firm’s history, elevating its production to a new artistic level while preserving the highest standards of craftsmanship. It was during this period that the firm produced its most distinguished works, combining technical excellence with authorial design and contemporary artistic vision.
The publication of this lamp in a specialized 1911 album confirms its status as a model piece. Its association with Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna underscores both the prestige of the commission and the ideological context of the era, when church art was regarded as a carrier of spiritual and national values. Today, such works are of significant interest to museum collections and advanced private collectors, representing the culmination of Russian ecclesiastical Art Nouveau on the eve of the dramatic transformations of the 20th century.
